Directional Coronary Atherectomy (DCA)
![]()
Directional coronary atherectomy (DCA) is a non-surgical procedure for the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). During the DCA, the blockage in a coronary artery is removed using a specialized catheter that enters from the groin area and is positioned using x-ray technology. The DCA catheter contains a small mechanically driven cutter that shaves the plaque (blockage) from the artery wall and stores it in a collection chamber. When the device is withdrawn, the plaque is removed, restoring blood flow to the heart muscle.
Patients are sedated, but remain awake during the DCA procedure, which may last between one and three hours.
