FAQ

I am currently taking the blood thinner Coumadin. What side effects or interactions should I be aware of?

Side effects for Coumadin include bleeding ranging from minor bruising to serious hemorrhages. Notify your physician immediately if this occurs. Nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite occur occasionally.

Drug interactions that can increase the effect of Coumadin can occur with aspirin and other pain medications including Motrin or similar drugs. Chronic alcohol use and excessive amounts of foods high in Vitamin K (broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts) can decrease the effect of Coumadin.

Patients are strongly encouraged to discuss the use of this drug with their physician or pharmacist. Let your physician or pharmacist know you are on Coumadin before starting any new medications, prescription or over the counter, and before making any drastic dietary changes.

The cold and flu season is rapidly approaching. I have read that the natural product Echinacea can help prevent getting an infection. Will this prevent the flu? Is Echinacea safe for me to take?

There are nine species of echinacea and all are found in the U.S. This herb is thought to strengthen the body’s system for fighting infection. There is limited research evaluating the ability of echinacea to prevent the flu. Side effects of echinacea are not common. Occasional allergies can occur in individuals allergic to sunflowers or ragweed. Flu shots remain the best way for patients to prevent or reduce the effects of influenza.
