The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
St. Elizabeths
Hospital, Belleville, IL 62220, (618) 234-2120 ext.1513
St. Elizabeths Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation is a multi-phase program of medical care designed to restore the cardiac patient to a full and productive life. Inpatient and outpatient programs address the physiological, psychological, social, vocational and recreational aspects of human function. Phase I Cardiac Rehab begins as an inpatient, while Phases II & III are follow up outpatient programs. Each program offers individualized evaluation and intervention to guide you on the right path towards a healthy, more productive life.
Phase I
Cardiac Rehab Phase I is a one-on-one inpatient program introducing you to the importance of heart health education and exercise. Throughout the length of stay, exercise specialists and registered nurses will provide supervised, monitored ambulation. The goal is to offset the negative physiological and psychological effects of bed rest and to prepare patients for their upcoming discharge.
In addition to exercise, your cardiac risk factors will be identified and appropriate educational materials provided. Such topics may include education on hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, weight loss, congestive heart failure and, of course, smoking. Additional education is provided when discharge is anticipated. Discharge education is necessary for those leaving after any surgical intervention, cardiac cath, and/or angioplasty. Topics include post-operative restrictions, signs and symptoms of heart disease, home activities, and the continuation of outpatient Cardiac Rehab phase II.
Phase II
The Phase II Cardiac Rehab outpatient program is a physician referred monitored exercise program designed for individuals diagnosed with heart disease. The program is insurance based lasting approximately 12 weeks, meeting three days per week with morning and evening classes available.
The Phase II program provides an environment suitable for monitored exercise and education on heart related topics. A detailed orientation allows the staff to assess physical capabilities, and identify your risk factors for heart disease. Identifiable risk factors for coronary artery disease include hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking , stress, and inactivity. Educational information is readily available and scheduled lectures allow an individual to learn more about their heart condition.
The second service provided in the outpatient setting is a monitored exercise routine. Our staff of registered nurses and exercise specialists design an exercise program based on your clinical status. An exercise program consisting of aerobic (walking, stationary bike, etc.) and anaerobic (weights, arm crank) exercises will be performed at a target heart rate. Additional monitoring includes blood pressures, blood glucose, ECG monitors, and weekly physical assessments. Participation in the rehabilitation setting could yield benefits such as increased functional capacity (Heart & Lungs), maintenance of joint flexibility, decrease in cholesterol, improving the quality of life and reduced hospital visits.
Phase III
The third phase of Cardiac Rehab is a self-pay maintenance exercise program. The Phase III program is open to graduates of Phase II and their spouses, and individuals referred by a physician. Services are offered three days a week with access to professional supervision for questions and concerns.
